Dominarás el tercer condicional en inglés

Ser capaz de utilizar el tercer condicional en inglés te hará sonar como un hablante nativo. Así que sigue leyendo para saber cuándo y cómo utilizarlo. 

¿Cuándo se utiliza el tercer condicional? 

El tercer condicional en inglés se utiliza para expresar la consecuencia pasada de una acción o situación irreal en el pasado. Si crees que debes reforzar el pasado simple aquí lo podrás hacer.  

Por ejemplo, 

• If he had studied harder, he would have passed the exam. 

Si hubiera estudiado más, habría aprobado el examen. 

La primera acción (estudiar mucho) no ocurrió. Pero en el caso de que ocurriera, la consecuencia fue aprobar el examen.  

Expresa una situación IMAGINARIA con un resultado IMAGINARIO 

CONDICIÓN  

IF + Pasado perfecto 

If she had worked faster,  

RESULTADO 

Would + have + verbo participio 

She would have been at home early 

El tercer condicional es muy similar al segundo condicional. Pero mientras el segundo condicional se refiere a algo irreal ahora o en el futuro, el tercer condicional se refiere a algo irreal en el pasado. 

A menudo utilizamos el tercer condicional para expresar arrepentimiento, es decir, para describir cosas que lamentamos que hayan sucedido o que no hayan sucedido. Por ejemplo, 

• If my alarm had gone off, I wouldn’t have been late to work. 

Si mi alarma hubiera sonado, no habría llegado tarde al trabajo. 

• If there hadn’t been so much traffic, we wouldn’t have missed our flight. 

Si no hubiera habido tanto tráfico, no habríamos perdido el vuelo. 

¿Cómo se crea el tercer condicional en inglés? 

Para hacer una frase en el tercer condicional, usamos 

• If you had told me about the meeting, I would have come. 

Si me hubieras avisado de la reunión, habría ido. 

• If you had told me about the meeting, I wouldn’t have missed it. 

Si me hubieras avisado de la reunión, no habría faltado. 

Como con todos los condicionales, también se puede invertir esta estructura: 

Habría + participio pasado si + pasado perfecto. 

• I’d have come to the meeting if you’d told me about it. 

Habría asistido a la reunión si me hubieras avisado. 

• I wouldn’t have missed the meeting if you’d told me about it. 

No habría faltado a la reunión si me hubieras avisado. 

Los hablantes nativos suelen contraer la palabra would a 'd'. También es aceptable su uso en la escritura informal. Y en el habla es común contraer have a 've en el tercer condicional. Por ejemplo, 

• I’d’ve come to the meeting if you’d told me. 

Habría ido a la reunión si me lo hubieras dicho. 

Sin embargo, esto no se puede escribir, ni siquiera en un contexto informal. Sin embargo, es útil tenerlo en cuenta para poder identificarlo cuando los hablantes nativos lo dicen. 

Como alternativa a would, podemos completar la segunda parte de una oración de tercera condicional con could. Por ejemplo, 

• If I’d stayed at university, I could have got a master's degree. 

Si hubiera seguido en la universidad, podría haber obtenido un máster. 

He aquí otros ejemplos de la tercera condicional: 

• He’d have got the job if he hadn’t been so nervous in the interview. 

Habría conseguido el trabajo si no hubiera estado tan nervioso en la entrevista. 

• What would you have done if you’d been me? 

¿Qué habrías hecho tú en mi lugar? 

• If it hadn’t been snowing heavily, we’d have carried on skiing. 

Si no hubiera nevado mucho, habríamos seguido esquiando. 

• The company would have survived, if there hadn’t been a recession. 

La empresa habría sobrevivido si no hubiera habido recesión. 

• Would you have accepted the offer, if we’d reduced the price? 

¿Habrías aceptado la oferta si hubiéramos reducido el precio? 

• If you hadn’t invited me out, I’d have stayed in all day. 

Si no me hubieras invitado a salir, me habría quedado en casa todo el día. 

• She wouldn’t have given you a fine if you’d apologized.  

No te habría puesto una multa si te hubieras disculpado. 

• They could have stayed here if they hadn’t found any accommodation. 

Podrían haberse quedado aquí si no hubieran encontrado alojamiento. 

• If they hadn’t won that match, the club would have fired the manager. 

Si no hubieran ganado ese partido, el club habría despedido al director. 

Mezclar el segundo y el tercer condicional en inglés 

¡Hay dos formas de hacerlo! 

• Describir la consecuencia presente de una situación pasada  

If + past simple, would have + past participle (cajita) 

Si + pasado simple, habría + participio pasado 

• If I were adventurous, I’d have gone backpacking after university. 

Si fuera aventurero, me habría ido de mochilero después de la universidad. 

• Describir la consecuencia pasada de una situación presente 

    If + pasado perfecto, would + verbo 

• If we hadn’t missed the flight, we’d be in our hotel by now 

Si no hubiéramos perdido el vuelo, ya estaríamos en nuestro hotel.
